Active Plus is Keeping Kids Healthy in NYC
Keeping Up with Health During the Pandemic
Recently, AMNY did an article about Active Plus. Active Plus is an organization that is dedicated to underserved children who live in NYC. This is an organization that was formed in 2015 by individuals who came from the city who wanted to do something to improve the health of the young ones in the burrows of NYC. This organization was able to raise $50,000 in order to support fitness programs and coaching that is aimed at keeping minority children active
Why Active Plus?
Active Plus was created because there is such a disparity when it comes to the health and fitness of children in low income areas. Historically, families in low income areas have less education about the importance of physical activity and healthy eating. Added to that, low income families have less access to healthy food. Even though there may be healthy food in the stores that low income families frequent. Because of the high price of healthy food and also because of the lack of experience eating and cooking some healthy foods, these families are stuck in a cycle of eating foods that raise blood pressure, cause obesity and diabetes. In order to combat this disparity. A group of adults who grew up in these low income areas decided to do something to change the trajectory of their younger peers. Active Plus was created to keep these young ones healthy and busy.
What Active Plus Did For Funds
Even in the face of a global pandemic, children still need to be able to eat healthy and exercise. Active Plus encourages children to stay involved in their health trajectory, Active Plus has come up with nutrition and fitness coaching. In order to finance this endeavor, Fitness Plus set out to raise 10,000 in order for kids to have a safe place to learn and thrive. A large number of grassroots donors and other companies that work in the fitness industry found out about this goal, and they decided to donate. As word got out more and more, there were even more groups and partners that wanted to get on board. With all of the support, Active Plus was able to raise 50,000 in the month of June.
More on Active Plus
Active plus has also received donations that come in the form of fitness training. In the month of June, several virtual workouts were donated. These workouts include the following: Obe Fitness, Harlem Cycle, and Jonathan Chadwell LLC. Five years ago, the idea for Active Plus came about. In the burrow of Harlem, 80 percent of the population is minority. It was apparent that the vast majority of the children in this area were not exposed to individuals in the field of health and fitness. Tarik Kitson is the Executive Director of Active plus, and Kitson’s goal was to expose these children to people who looked like them and who would take an active role in exposing the children to the advantages of living a healthy life. Kitson has been truly touched by the overwhelming support that Active Plus has received by citizens of New York, and the Goal of this organization is to keep its commitment to the community for another five years. Even though the pandemic has made things more difficult, the virtual support has been amazing.
