An Elementary Migrant Story
The world’s biggest public school system is getting bigger. The ongoing wave of migrant families has quickly multiplied the student population at PS 82 - The Hammond School. The Queens elementary school welcomes English-learning children from Venezuela and other South American countries with open arms. Classes are bursting at the seams as staff work relentlessly to meet the student’s unique needs, while upholding equitable care and education for all.
These changes carry over to the Active Plus structured recess program as well, where our instructors and school aides work together to engage students in both Spanish and English. Our English-learning students are increasing their vocabulary everyday, and establishing their place in the school's community. We help students realize the power of their voices through play. It’s remarkable to see them step up as leaders on their blended teams. They help each other navigate objectives, developing healthy sportsmanship habits, and making sure their team members are never left behind. Simultaneously, our instructors are learning to deliver instructions and encourage students in Spanish so they feel comfortable participating.
The universal language of laughter and joy is heard throughout playtime. In the most diverse city in the world, this school showcases how the melting pot brews effective ways for all children to stay ahead of the learning curve, no matter the obstacles.
