About Active Plus

Today, more than 1/3 of U.S. adults are obese and approximately 12.7 million children are obese in the United States. Active Plus is an organization established to educate children by disseminating information about healthy lifestyle choices including, but not limited to, healthy food preparations, the importance of exercise, and the availability of proper health care' to stimulate, foster, encourage and promote the exchange of ideas, information and opinions on contemporary issues affecting personal health.  

We specialize working with students through sports & recreation, nutritional workshops, community volunteering, educational health field trips and mentoring.

Active Plus provides charity  group fitness classes, personal training, adult athletic leagues and comprehensible health education based lectures. These services help fund the foundation for youth programming. 

Active Plus creates conventional but engaging, time-saving, and educational routines that entice members of all ages in the community.  What sets this non-profit organization apart is their wholehearted commitment and investment to the youth they serve and their client’s health.  

Active Plus Team

Tarik Kitson, Executive Director 

Tarik Kitson is a health care administrator at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and President/Co-Founder of Active Plus. Tarik has been working in the health care arena since 2004. He obtained his Bachelors of Art from SUNY Geneseo and Masters of Public Health from Columbia University.  

He was a four year collegiate basketball star while also receiving many educational accolades and community activism awards. In 2013 Tarik Kitson co-founded Active Plus and was featured on NY1 highlighting his work being done in East Harlem.

His intense dedication to end the obesity epidemic keeps his drive to fight for his community.

Wayne Charles II, Board of Directors Treasurer

Mr. Charles has worked with various organizations and causes in the Harlem community for the past decade. His vast network of local leaders and organizations in the community has been very beneficial for the growth of Active Plus. Wayne was first introduced to Rotary International by his father and quickly learned that the Rotary motto of "Service Above Self" aligned with his beliefs to help others in a meaningful way.

Shortly after joining the Rotary Club of Harlem (formerly the Rotary Club of Upper Manhattan) Wayne was appointed President of his club. This appointment marked a milestone for the Harlem Club and Rotary District 7230 with Wayne becoming the youngest President on record at the age of twenty four years old. This led to Wayne being interviewed and spotlighted in the Rotarian Magazine for his joint efforts with other Manhattan Rotary Clubs to raise funds for the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami disaster relief and East Africa famine crisis.

Wayne enjoys meeting new individuals and exploring new cultures and food cuisines. He believes strongly in helping the youth of tomorrow and has been influential in various youth events in the local Harlem community. He currently works in Healthcare and the Real Estate Industry. Wayne resides in Harlem, New York.

Dwayne Norris, Board of Directors Secretary 


Dwayne is a constant donor to nonprofit organizations, but gets the most satisfaction from hands on community service work. Through his four-year membership with the Rotary Club of Harlem he has spearheaded book drives that have allowed the donation of over two thousand books to students in Harlem schools. He works with the Education Clinic and Reading is Fundamental annually to read to the children and teach them to dream big and work for their goals. Dwayne volunteers time to assist at shelters in the city and hand out meals at food pantries. Through his involvement with Active Plus, Inc. and the Rotary Club he has provided health & fitness workshops to the youth and parents in the community and continues to be an advocate for living a healthy lifestyle. Dwayne is a martial artist who has been training in Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do since 2008. Each week he volunteers his time to teach classes at New York Martial Arts Academy to new students and his peers. Dwayne was voted by his fellow club rotary members to become the new club President, and began his first term July 1, 2016.

Sajana Blank, Board of Director

Sajana is a passionate international educator with more than seven years of professional experience working for diverse nonprofit organizations and higher education institutions. She is a graduate of St. Lawrence University where she majored in Global Studies, and is currently pursuing an MS in Nonprofit Leadership at Fordham University. Sajana works in the Study Abroad office at Fordham University promoting international education to undergraduate students. She has extensive intercultural and international experience and has worked, lived and traveled to countries throughout the world. Sajana has a strong commitment to peace and social justice as well as working with and for youth which is why she enjoys her role as Advisor/Board Member of Active Plus.

Miguel Roxas,  Director of Programming

Miguel Roxas graduated from Stony Brook University, with a degree in Health Sciences with a concentration in Health Management/Informatics and Public Health. He was a four year letterman for the Football team as well, and was a graduate assistant for his 5th year there.  Currently hired as a program coordinator for the Hematology and Oncology Fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.  Miguel is in a candidate for the NASM CPT certification, along with competing as an amateur boxer countrywide. 

Meech Aneke, Director of Operations and Hospital Hoops Commissioner 

Commissioner of Active Plus Charity Hospital Basketball League  which has been in existence for over 40 years and Active Plus Youth Basketball Coach. Active Plus has been privileged to work with multi faceted Meech Aneke. 


Ysanet Batista, Health Education Instructor

Ysanet Batista is a vegetarian chef, farmer, and community organizer from Harlem by way of the Dominican Republic. She is the founder and owner of Woke Foods, a cooperative business that focuses on making Dominican vegan food. A graduate of Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI she spent a couple of years working in major hotels companies before transitioning to community based work. Today, she resides and works in the Bronx as a nutrition and food justice educator for youth.  She is inspired by the youth she works with to advocate for a better and just food system. Ysanet is currently a student at Farm School NYC earning a certificate in Urban Agriculture.

Carlos Shields, Fitness Coach

Carlos is a Certified Personal Trainer and a Credentialed EPIC hospital information systems trainer for New York City's Hospital and Health Corporation. He received his Bachelors of Arts in Organizational Management from Manhattanville College, MBA in Information Systems and another MBA in Healthcare Management from Iona College. Carlos has volunteered and personal trained all over New York to help eradicate obesity in society, especially in low income areas. His passion to help others through healthy eating demonstrations, nutritional classes, fitness training and group training are demonstrated in his daily life.

Cherelle DeJesus, Personal Trainer

Cherelle DeJesus is certified by the American Council on exercise and specializes in weight loss, corrective exercise and fitness nutrition. She decided to pursue her passion as a fitness trainer in 2013 after her own weight loss journey and has been creating successful training programs for her clients ever since. 

Cherelle is passionate about helping her clients achieve noticeable results, build confidence and work towards a healthy lifestyle.
